If your algorithms have worked right and you’re the artsy and anime vibe, I know that you have found Nimberlyy. Nimberlyy‘s art, Kim by her real name, came to my eyes on TikTok and I was instantly addicted. But why? Maybe because of the calmness of her videos and snippets of life that I could relate to. It’s simply cool and relatable. And for a lot of black girls and women. It’s also being portrayed in those forms and colors that feels truly poetic.

Nimberlyy’s art can remind us of the 90’s and 2000’s animes era spirit: I’m thinking about Daria (1997-2001) or As Told by Ginger (2000-2021). The pastel colors, the big and disproportionate eyes to represent myopia or visual problems in an aesthetic and surrealistic way. Details are magnified and soften reality. The differences are underlined and that is the power of Nimberlyy: the particularities have an importance. The way she portrays herself and other black characters is so right and almost comic. Because, why try to be normal when you’re not. The urban ballads, the perks of providing for ourselves or the capitalistic magic behind choosing our food and the brands associated to it for the aesthetic of our life. It’s simple yet needed, it’s literally the visualisation of a modern city black girl trope. She draws us with our uniqueness, our unlimited features and beauty and during peaceful moments. Through her sketchy moments, we can feel the heaviness of everyday life from the subway and the stress of living in a big city flying away. She has the power of romanticizing her everyday life. I personally enjoy her creations as a black woman, living in a big and complex city, just like her. A city where, as New York, everyday is a struggle to navigate socially, financially and emotionally. A place where beauty is everywhere but also beneath us. Through Nimberlyy’s eyes, we can calm down and appreciate every tiny moment, we can stop the frenetic scrolling and try to relax and regulate our nervous system.

But Kim’s creations are foremost, candid and modern representations of herself and her entourage. By not really revealing  her face, the artist has chosen to show her life and personality throughout her art. It’s a personification of who she is : a delicate, urban and creative black girl. She has created her universe, in which she can have those very bold eyebrows, where she can reinvent herself as much as she wants and without limits. Nimberlyy is clearly an artist of today, animated by vivid aspirations and touching a lot of people with her vision and singularity, without losing her essence and sensibility. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her and her creativity and to see her gain more success and visibility!
